By Shannon Farley
Sustainability runs deep at Rios Tropicales. From the eco-adventure company’s start 32 years ago, they have passionately protected the environment in Costa Rica and promoted sustainability and conservation while taking visitors from all over the world on outdoor adventures.
Now the award-winning adventure company and geotourism leader has been awarded certification as an environmentally, socially and culturally sustainable tour operator by Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.
As part of its global environmental commitment, Royal Caribbean set a goal to have 1,000 of its destination tours come from sustainably certified operators by the end of 2020. Royal Caribbean is employing practices set by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), co-founded by the United Nations and regarded as the leading standard for global sustainable tourism.
“We at Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. applaud you for your dedication and commitment to becoming a sustainable tour operator! We understand that destinations are the highlight of a cruise vacation, guests want to explore and discover new cultures and locations, and your services are key part of the experience. We know you have made a great effort to incorporate best practices for sustainable tourism in your business. This commitment has made a difference for all of us – and for our destinations,” states a Royal Caribbean thank you letter to Rios Tropicales.

Protecting Costa Rica’s precious environment is at the core of Rios Tropicales’ mission. Every aspect of the ecotourism company reflects their dedication to sustainability – from their ecological award-winning Rios Tropicales Lodge on the Pacuare River, to being a completely carbon neutral business in Costa Rica, and protecting the largest private rainforest reserve on the Pacuare River. Rios Tropicales participates in the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Billion Trees campaign and has planted over 28,324 native Costa Rican hardwood trees to date.
In Rios “We practice sustainability not because it’s trendy, but because we love our Costa Rican natural playground and want to share its wonders with others – today and for generations to come. At Rios Tropicales, we believe we are role models and educators not just for our industry peers (and competitors) and ecotourism guests, but also for our local communities.”
