21 Jan Walking the Ecotourism Talk–A Conversation with EcoTourLinQ
The Growing Interest in Ecotourism
Even after being in the ecotourism business for 30 years in Costa Rica, we’re still just as passionate as when we founded Rios Tropicales in 1985. Our love of this beautiful country runs deep and every aspect of our adventure company reflects our dedication to sustainability. We also remain passionate about sharing our experience in sustainability and eco-conscious travel with other organizations, especially ones that help travelers understand ecotourism, its benefits and how to find companies that support sustainable travel.
Sharing Our Story with an Ecotourism Community
That’s why we were delighted to speak with EcoTourLinQ recently. EcoTourLinQ is an online community for people who are concerned with environmental conservation and responsible travel. This fairly new venture allows users to discover eco-tour companies and share their experiences with fellow eco-travelers. Founder Deborah Regen is a nature lover who spent her youth growing up in the Gulf of Mexico. The natural beauty of the beaches and marine life in Florida enriched her life and now she uses her passion and work experience to promote and support ecotourism. According to Deborah, “The concept that travelers should experience the natural world and other cultures in ways that are responsible and environmentally sensitive instead of exploitative and wasteful is forward-thinking.”
She recently “spoke” with Rios Tropicales founder Rafael Gallo. Over the course of the interview, we talked about Costa Rica’s leadership in sustainable tourism and, of course, the many reasons why Costa Rica is such an amazing destination. An excerpt is below.
EVERY COUNTRY HAS TO COMPETE THESE DAYS TO ATTRACT TRAVELERS. BESIDES THE BIODIVERSITY, WHICH YOU MENTIONED, WHAT BRINGS PEOPLE TO COSTA RICA?
Well Costa Rica is a very friendly country – we have no army! We are also very eco-friendly and remain a great model for other countries who want to copy our methods. We offer plenty of eco-destinations for nature-lovers with great guides and operators to choose from. Most companies here who say they are into ecotourism are authentic, say 80%…just do some research before you decide which one.
